we, the people

With lyrics both timely and timeless, WE, THE PEOPLE is a new American patriotic song designed to speak to -- and be sung by -- all Americans.

America, the home of liberty,
America, with pride we sing of thee.
Your sons and your daughters always brave, ever true;
America, we pledge our loyalty to you.

Freedom's banner waves o'er this land we love
From which we humbly ask for blessings from the One above.
A beacon bright with hope unites us shore to shore,
Illumining our country's flag and all that it stands for:
Sweet freedom forever more.

We are living the dreams that our patriots portrayed;
America's promise remains ours to this day --
A tribute to the ones who fought for Red, White and Blue.
America, we pledge our loyalty to you.

With pride in every heart, WE, THE PEOPLE stand as one;
Our next great chapter now has begun.
Affirming our allegiance, we proclaim each day anew:
America, we pledge our loyalty to you.

virginia, ever enshrined

If you love Virginia, VIRGINIA, EVER ENSHRINED will tug right at your heartstrings.  It's available as piano/vocal sheet music, octavo choral music for SATB and SA choirs, lead sheet download, mp3 downloads and as a CD.

Virginia, where the rolling mountains capture the eye,
Virginia, where the songbirds serenade the clear blue sky.
Virginia, where the crystal streams cross valleys so wide,
Deep within my heart is where you’ll always reside.

Democracy’s cradle, we hold you to be,
America’s birthplace, the home of liberty.
Provenance of Presidents throughout our history.
Your sons and daughters show the world
That people must live free.

The colors of the Shenandoah stay always in my mind,
The salty air of Chesapeake I’ll never leave behind,
The pioneering spirit of the Blue Ridge you will find
Within the soul of this Virginian ever enshrined.

Virginia Delegate Dave Marsden introduced House Bill 2662 to the 2007 Virginia legislature to make VIRGINIA, EVER ENSHRINED the official state song of Virginia.  The House Rules Committee members listened and sang along, and then referred it to the Hanger Commission.  And there it hangs.  Virginia has not had an official song since retiring Carry Me Back To Old Virginia in 1997.  In a Washington Post reader poll, VIRGINIA, EVER ENSHRINED was a clear favorite.

If you are a Virginia resident and would like this song approved as the official State song, please contact your legislator as well as Senator Emmett Hanger. Go to http://legis.state.va.us/. Under QUICK LINKS, click on "Who's My Legislator" and type in your address. Or go straight to this state form type in your address. It's an easy way to instantly email both your State Delegate and Senator. THANK YOU!

by george, it's washington!

Why should Virginia be the only one having all the fun of trying to find a song that best depicts its virtues? How about the District of Columbia? Where's its song?

Washington, D.C., the only place for me to be,
The town where history is always in the making,
Yes, right here in Washington, D.C.,
Founded in seventeen-ninety,
It is the one and only place that can be called,
By George, yes, George called it the Federal City.

No votes* but paddle boats, cherry blossoms fill the air.
Foggy Bottom, Farragut Square
And great white columns everywhere!
Georgetown, Tenleytown, Metro down to Chinatown.
U Street can't be beat nor Rock Creek Park
And pandas barking at the zoo.

Washington Monument, lots and lots of government,
A donkey and an elephant,
The White House with the President
Four years or even eight.
Yes, Washington is my town.  No one better put it down.
D.C., you're for me.
Your pools reflect our history and dreams.

Washington, D.C., the only place for me to be,
The town where history is always in the making,
Yes, right here in Washington, D.C.,
The nation's Capital city,
It is the one and only place that can be called,
By George, yes, George called it not Washington,
But that's its name – with cherry trees and apple pie,
Red, white and blue up in the sky –
It's Washington, BY GEORGE, IT'S WASHINGTON,,
Yes, it's my Washington, D.C.

* Song has also been recorded with the alternate lyrics "We got the vote!" planning ahead for when Washingtonians finally do get the vote. On July 4, 2005, Washington Post writer Paul Farhi lamented, "Washington has many blessings – monuments and memorials, baseball and bureaucrats – but it doesn't have a song. It has never really had one…" But no longer because Carol took up the challenge.

Reminiscent of a John Philip Sousa march and college fight song written with a Broadway flair flavored with patriotism, BY GEORGE sings the city's praises, teaches a bit of its history and geography and, by George, does it all with a sense of humor.

U.S. Marine Band Senior Assistant Director Major Jason K. Fettig, wrote that he was "very amused by the style and the clever lyrics," and called it "a fine song and very well written."  Major Fettig wishes the composer "the best of luck in bringing this song to the attention of individuals who can work on designating it an official song for the District."

And Seth Kibel, a multi-award-winning Washington-area musician writes, 'Woo hoo! Very cool...so what d'ya say, Mayor Fenty?'

welcome home to the nationals

A fight song for the Washington Nationals

WELCOME HOME TO THE NATIONALS
Here in old D.C.
We're ever true to the red, white and blue
As Washington fights for victory.

So WELCOME HOME TO THE NATIONALS,
Our own capital team.
Pledge your allegiance to Nats,
Our home team at the bat
And shout it out for old D.C.

Baseball's answer to "Hail to the Redskins," WELCOME HOME is a classic fight song for the Washington Nationals baseball team. Whether you love that Nat's theme song, "We're Nuts About the Nats," or it drives you crazy, have a listen to WELCOME HOME TO THE NATIONALS and imagine a marching band (or ballpark organ) and fans singing at the start of home games and whenever a player drives a run home. If you think WELCOME HOME is a winner, please tell Nationals Park management! Thanks!

brick by brick, wall by wall

Anthem commissioned by Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia

Bringing hope, transforming lives,
Bridging differences, helping families thrive
In partnership and community
Reaching out with dignity
Close to home or far away
Reaching out with love today.

We're building a world full of hope
Building bridges among us all
Using our hands to build a new life
BRICK BY BRICK, WALL BY WALL. (repeat)

On common ground, we forge ahead
Not with words but with deeds instead.
We hand out hope, we hammer and nail.
Working together, we cannot fail.
Close to home or far away,
Working together with love today.

We're building a world full of hope
Building bridges among us all
Using our hands to build a new life
BRICK BY BRICK, WALL BY WALL. (repeat)

Building on faith brick by brick,
Building on faith wall by wall,
Building on faith, yes,
We're fixing the world.
Making it better for all.

burke centre, always my home

Anthem for 1,700-acre planned community in Northern Virginia

There is a place where nature lives side by side
With those who in this great place abide.
There is a place where people both young and old
In community together reside.
Nature and community
Joined together in harmony,
Burke Centre with its proud history
Is the place I call my home.

Burke Centre, Burke Centre, no matter where I roam,
Burke Centre, Burke Centre will always be my home.
(repeat)

patriots' dreams

As surprising as it might seem, some composers of school alma maters are actually still alive. Carol wrote George Mason University's alma mater in October 2001 in the wake of 9/11 when patriotic fervor was almost palpable... hence, PATRIOTS' DREAMS.

To the green and gold we will ever be true
Here and wherever we roam
And we sing of a place where the young and the old
Give the patriots’ dreams a home.

To our alma mater, to George Mason,
Our University,
To the place where freedom and learning stand proud,
Where the past and the future meet.

From Pohick Creek and around the globe,
We sing in unity,
With our voices raised and our spirit strong,
We go forth to reach our goals.

To the green and gold, we will ever be true
Here and wherever we roam
And we sing of a place where the young and the old
Give the patriots’ dreams a home.
And we sing of a place where the young and the old
Give the patriots’ dreams a home.
